Lost media is a topic that has fascinated the internet for about a decade now, it seems like every month there’s a handful of new discoveries great and small. A new piece of media that the corporate big wigs saw as disposable now returning to light. even though what their looking for is most likely shit. Let’s be real here, A lot of this stuff would probably be seen as content slop if it was released today. Shure you could make the argument that it’s not actually slop because even the so-called disposable shows, movies even commercials, had more effort that what we get now. But most of y’all lack the curiosity and media literacy skills to find or apricated all the European animated films and obscure You Tube cartoon pilots so fuck you.
But, back to the topic of lost media, most of the time it’s more about the journey not the destination. The crushing realization that a show you grew up can’t be found normally. The nights looking through 20- to 30-year-old websites. The friendships built from interactions through lost media forums and the satisfaction that you saved something from disappearing into the abyss of content. every once in a wile you find something worth looking for. Something so innocent, so artfully crafted that the fact that no one has seen head nor tail of it for thirty years is a societal tragedy on par with deltateing an entire movie for taxes and yet we all just accept it because “the show was shown to toddlers” or “Writing woman wrongly is equivalent to black face for some reason” This forgotten little show is known, as The Little Twins.
The show aired in the states on Nick Jr in the summer of 1999. Since they only had a few episodes they billed it as a mini-series that would only air for two weeks. Only 8 out of the 13 episodes were aired in that time. The little twins was a Japanese anime animated by Toie that followed a family of tiny munchkins livening in the woods. They released it in an OVA format meaning that they would sell the 13 episodes as sepret thirty-minute VHSes. It’s adorable. But it’s also got a bit of substance to it. The art style is a beautiful watercolor look to it. The anime was based on a Japanese chidnerends book and you can tell by it’s lovey visuals. In A Time For Giving, the twins celebrate mischief night it’s their version of Halloween and the episode has parallels to Halloween’s folk origins. Particularly from the Celtic haff who believed in offering treats to spirts long departed lest ye succumb to dying in the harsh winter. It’s an adorable and cozy spin on a normally spooky time of year. Shure, I love watching monstroelasue drowning the perfection seeking public in a sea of blood in the substance and going honestly, same every year. But it’s also nice to take a break from the spooky magookyes and enjoy the childlike wonder of some tiny elves helping a spirt spread stardust around to ensure a safe winter. In The Best Gift Of All the twins try to get a gift for a couple about to get married. And the kids feel left out from all the grown-up work. The adults work on sewing tablecloths, woodcarving benches, and a whole ass wedding house which would be very inconvenient if the marriage goes south so it better have been worth it. Everyone seems to be putting daisies everywhere. The yellow center represents a home filled with happiness and every petal is a year of happiness. So, they decide to get them daisies lots of daisies millions of daisies. Each for a million years of happiness. And they decorate a big float for the wedding day. But then a hedgehog tips over the float leavening the flowers to float downstream. But they make the most out of a bad situation and the flowers float around the couple’s newly built cottage. There’s a clear moral about how experiences and nacher mean much more than physical possessions and starring at your iPad all day. The show has this wholesome cozy vibe that probably led to at least one millennial toddler developing a cottage core obsession in their 20’s. I knew I had to find more I tried asking some people on the lost media wiki, but at some point I forgot to delete my address in the DMs and just doxed myself. So, to avoid having the FBI come to my house, I decided to look for the original Japanese VHSes. I could only find one on Buyee and I had to go to a library out of town to digitize it. It being in Japanese, I had no idea what anyone was saying, but the story was still easy to follow. The twins and their friends build a clubhouse and do various summertime things. Including swimming naked but it’s clear that this isn’t a sexual thing it’s more of a we have no idea how tiny elves would even make swimmware thing. Still it’s obvious that this episode was not shown on nick jr. At the end of the episode, the clubhouse is blown into the river and the kids say goodbye to it for all the fun moments they shared together. How adorable.
